Important Questions to Ask

Central to FGCU’s sustainability efforts is the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education (CESE), which strives “To advance innovative educational research methodologies and pedagogies in environmental and sustainability education.” To that end, the Earth Charter Scholarship Project connects scholars with a global network focused on ethically fostering sustainability initiatives. When it comes to research, FGCU has collaborated with The Humane Society of the United States in Washington, D.C., to evaluate sustainable food systems, and has provided Earth Charter Mini-Grants for faculty and staff environmental and sustainability education projects. Additionally, the Earth Charter Meal has been used as an educational methodology to bring together student leaders from a diverse range of campus groups and organizations. Student Associates for a Greener Environment (SAGE) “provides students the opportunity to successfully realize a goal, project, or vision, in connection with the principles outlined in the Earth Charter.” With its unrelenting and thorough focus on sustainability for faculty, staff, and students, it should come as no surprise that FGCU’s CESE is inspired by founder of contemporary environmental movement, Rachel Carson, whose namesake is used both for a distinguished lecture series and its highest award, given to someone who “embodies Rachel Carson’s contributions most relevant to the center.” As she said best, "Future generations are unlikely to condone lack of prudent concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life.” With FGCU’s help, they won’t have to.
